Advantages of Concrete over Pavers

If you’re planning a paving project around your home or business, your choice of material could make all the difference when it comes to cost, appearance and durability. Many people love the look of pavers, but concrete – believe it or not – can look very similar and provide some advantages that pavers can’t. Here are a few reasons why we believe that concrete is a better choice than pavers.

  • Cost: As much as you might like the appearance of pavers, you might not like the cost. The pavers themselves can be very expensive, and that’s not even taking into account the amount you’ll spend to have them installed. Concrete, on the other hand, usually costs less.
  • Appearance: Without a doubt, pavers are attractive and can add a certain charm and distinctive appearance to any home or business. But you may not know that concrete can be made to look so much like pavers that it’s hard to tell the difference. Modern concrete comes in a variety of colors – much more so, in fact, than pavers. And concrete can be created in a variety of patterns. If you love the appearance of pavers, but not the cost, concrete may be the solution you’re looking for!
  • Durability: Concrete, if properly maintained, can last for decades. Pavers, on the other hand, have a tendency to settle over time, creating an uneven surface. This is not only unattractive; it can also be hazardous for people walking on the surface.
  • Maintenance: No matter how much you may like the look of pavers, we suspect that you won’t like have to pull weeds out from between the pavers. That is an inevitable fact when you choose this type of paved surface. You can use chemicals to remove the weeds, but are you sure you want those chemicals around your family, pets and/or coworkers? With concrete, weeds are not an issue since the surface is solid – even if it doesn’t appear that way. When you choose pavers, you’ll also need to reapply sand in between each paver as it’s blown away by the wind or washed away by rain. Once again, this is not an issue with concrete. The fact is that any type of concrete surface is extremely easy to maintain. Just keep it clean by sweeping, and have a seal coat applied to protect it from the elements. Seal coating is not something that needs to be done often; the frequency will depend on your climate.

Whether you’re planning on installing a new driveway, patio, or walkway, concrete offers all the benefits of pavers minus the cost and maintenance. Contact a local paving contractor for more information.
